Don’t Let Cataracts Cloud Your Vision

Over 50% of people aged 65 and older have a cataract in one or both eyes. As the cataract progresses, vision deteriorates, leading to a decreased quality of life. Fortunately, cataract surgery can easily treat this condition.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are cloudy patches that develop on the lens of your eye. Cataracts can cause blurred or double vision, may increase light sensitivity and interfere with driving, especially at night. Without cataract surgery, millions of people around the world would be unable to see clearly.

The most common symptoms include:
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Colored halos around lights
  • Colors appearing more faded
  • Requiring brighter light for reading

When to Get Cataract Surgery

As we evaluate your eye health and vision, we'll carefully examine your lens for signs of cataract formation. If a cataract is detected and the clouding is causing visual disruption, our optometrist will refer you to a trusted surgeon for cataract surgery. EyeTech will be there for you, providing pre and post cataract surgery care.

As the condition begins to seriously impair your vision and adversely affects your daily life, impacting your ability to read, drive, watch TV or recognize faces, you should seriously consider surgery.

Benefits of Cataract Surgery

  • High success rate

Cataract surgery, one of the world’s most commonly performed surgeries, has a 95% success rate.

  • Quick and convenient

This procedure can take just 30 to 45 minutes in an outpatient setting or hospital.

  • Prevents other eye problems

Removing cataracts can reduce the risk of eye inflammation and pressure inside the eye–a leading cause of glaucoma.

  • Rapid recovery time

Patients start seeing more clearly within a few days. Colors may seem brighter thanks to the new, clear lens.

How to Prepare for Cataract Surgery

  • Apply antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eyedrops a few days before surgery if instructed to by your eye doctor
  • Arrange for a ride after the surgery, since you won’t be able to drive
  • Wash your face in the morning of the procedure and don’t wear eye makeup, strong perfumes or aftershave

What Happens During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery removes your natural cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to improve and restore vision. This common and very safe procedure is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis.

  • The eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) will perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. That means that you will come in for another surgery on the second eye. The procedure is brief and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
  • The eye doctor will place drops into your eyes to numb them and dilate your pupils. Though you’ll be conscious during the procedure, you may be offered a sedative to help you remain calm. The eye surgeon will then remove your natural lens and replace it with the IOL. You should feel no pain or discomfort thanks to the anesthetic.

Cataract Surgery After-Care

Senior couple with glasses

After surgery, you may feel a bit drowsy as an after-effect of the sedative. Your eye doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection, inflammation and to reduce pressure within your eye. The surgeon may recommend that you wear an eye patch for a few days after your surgery and the protective shield when you sleep during the recovery period. Make sure to avoid rubbing your eyes or touching them unless necessary.

A day after cataract surgery, we'll provide a post-operative eye exam to make sure that all is well. Your Escarpment Village optometrist will further perform a series of follow-up exams in the weeks and months to come. If determined that you require corrective lenses following your cataract surgery, we'll make sure you get the proper prescription.

Cataract Surgery Management FAQs

What are side effects of cataract surgery?

While side effects are rare, there are some issues that people commonly encounter in the days after surgery, as the eyes heal.

  • Dry eye
  • Feeling that something is in the eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity

If any of these side effects do not subside within a week or two, please contact EyeTech.

Can I delay cataract surgery

You can delay cataract surgery, but keep in mind that your vision will likely worsen the longer you put off the procedure.

When is cataract surgery not recommended?

Cataract patients who also have age-related macular degeneration or retinal detachment may not respond well to cataract surgery and the new lens may not correct vision.

Can cataract surgery give me 20/20 vision?

If you had great vision before developing cataracts, it’s likely that cataract surgery will restore your sight. Moreover, the IOL inserted into your eye can be designed to correct refractive errors, providing you with clear vision.

One of the only glasses labs in town that has the ability to add an anti-fogging coat to their lense... s. This allowed me to get reading glasses that work in the bath (don't get fogged over). Trust me I called around town and this feature is hard to find!

I have a stigmatism and typically rely on my good eye to get around. When my vision with my good ey... e started to strain, I knew it was time to get it checked out. I did a search on Google and found Eye Tech Eyes. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Trinidad and he exceeded my expectations. He gave me some options on either using contacts or glasses. I ended up going with both as I knew I would not always want to use contacts. I found some awesome glasses and I must say, they make me look really good! They had a ton of options to choose from. I highly recommend Dr. Trinidad and the team at Eye Tech Eyes! Thanks, again!

I've been seeing Dr. Lamei for 25 years and have referred many friends to her. She's warm, knowledge... able, and takes time with patients. She explains things thoroughly and caringly. Her office stays on top of modern technology and insurance changes. Office is easy to communicate with, schedule, and access.

I had a great Experience with Dr. Trinidad. At previous places, I felt like I was being rushed and t... he workers just did not care about my questions and concerns. I got this placed recommended to me and the experience was great. I got my questions answered and did not feel weird asking my concerns related to my contacts and future eye procedures that I might qualify for, 100% recommended.

Excellent Experience with Dr. Trinidad! I visited Dr. Trinidad for an issue I was experiencing with... my eye, and I couldn't be happier with the level of care I received. Dr. Trinidad was exceptional in every aspect of my visit. He patiently listened to all my concerns and questions, and his thorough explanations immediately put me at ease. What impressed me the most was his willingness to walk me through the issues I was facing with my eye, ensuring I understood everything clearly. Not only did he address my current problem, but he also took the time to discuss preventative measures, which I found incredibly valuable. Overall, my experience with Dr. Trinidad was excellent. His professionalism, expertise, and genuine concern for his patients' well-being truly set him apart. I highly recommend Dr. Trinidad to anyone in need of exceptional eye care. Thank you, Dr. Trinidad, for your outstanding service!

The visit was as good as an eye exam could be. The optometrist, Dr. Parisa Lamei was great in that s... he took a lot of time explaining what she was seeing in her exam of my eyes and symptoms. She even took time to sit with me after imaging and describe in detail what the images where telling her about my vision.

As someone who's worked for an optometry office before, I can definitely say that Eye Tech is a very... well run and organized eye doctor office. All staff are well trained and professional. Dr. L is gentle, perceptive, concise and communicates very clearly. She's no frills and is not like a used car salesperson who is constantly trying to upsell you or schmooze you. All equipment is up to date (no unpleasant air blowing eye pressure measuring device and a very user friendly optomap retinal imaging). I was seen on time without much of a wait and the appointment was quick and painless. My contacts came in 2 business days and the office staff were extremely knowledgeable about rebates. Prices were typical/fair and are what one should expect to pay for a quality eye exam. Also, I noticed that they use Essilor brand lenses for your glasses, which is one of the best, most high quality, long lasting lenses that you can get. (Not all opticals carry this lens brand and go for cheaper brands that have coatings that wear away after a couple years or scratch easily.) If you're going to complain about prices, then go to Walmart or Costco for your exam and glasses. There is a reason why things are priced a certain way, and you get what you pay for.

Marvelous Optometrist office. I took my grandson here a few months ago, he wanted to try contact le... nses. After a quick check, they let me know that the weakest lenses would be too strong for his eyes. Nor did they charge me for the visit. I went this week for my own annual check up. They gave me a very thorough, excellent exam. The best part was that they have a machine that takes a picture of my retina. It cost $39 extra but was worth it because I didn't have to get my eyes dilated, which I hate (and which leaves me not able to do anything for a couple of hours). I had a slight change in my contact lens prescription. I'm going to wear the sample pair they gave me for a few days to make sure I'm happy, then I can order some lenses. They took their time with me, explaining everything as we went along. I'm very pleased and will be using Eye Tech from now on.

Best Optometrist Office ever! I moved out of Austin but I make the trip to Eye Tech because they are... so awesome and give great care. I made the mistake of going to a department store eye doc in my small town for the convenience and I am still regretting it a year later. High tech equipment, expertise, and they take the time to make sure you get all the rebates off your contacts for each sample you try. Can't recommend them enough!

The staff here is great. I've been going here pretty much as long as they've been in business. Dr La... mei and her staff seem to care about each and every person who comes in

My whole family has been seeing Dr. Lamei for over 5 years, and have been very happy with the servic... e. She's been great with my son who started seeing her at first with me. She's always been patient with him on dilation drops, which he hated (they now have a machine making the drops unnecessary, to his excitement). A few years ago, he wanted to try contact lenses, and he tech worked with him for 20 minutes on trying some out. Although he chose to stick with glasses for now, it's great knowing that they'll work with him any time. I've only had 1 unsatisfactory experience with her office, and she was very apologetic for it. No one's perfect, but Dr. Lamei, Ruby and the staff are as close as I've found with an eye doctor.
